The use of snuff in the UK began during the mid 17th Century, having been introduced via Europe during the reign of Charles II. By the beginning of the 18th Century the production of ornate boxes for the keeping of snuff had really taken off, with both table snuff boxes, and pocket snuff boxes being produced. Due to the value of snuff and the social standing of those inhaling it, snuff boxes were often bespoke, and crafted to the highest standard. Gold and silver examples throughout the 18th and 19th Centuries are highly sought after, and collected the world over.
